Urban Data Challenge: Zürich | San Francisco | Geneva | Urban Prototyping

Buses, trams, bicycles, pedestrians, and cars zoom about modern cities like blood pulsing through the body. But with urban growth comes challenges—one of them is how to improve transportation. Luckily, advances in technology combined with active open data and open source movements mean the citizenry can increasingly become part of the solution. Unclog the arteries, stimulate circulation.

The Urban Data Challenge seeks to harvest the innovative and creative power of communities around the world to explore urban data sets through visualization.

Designers, programmers, data scientists, and artists alike are invited to take up the challenge: merge and compare mobility data sets from three cities—San Francisco, Geneva, and Zurich—and draw meaningful insights. Winning projects will showcase the power of open governmental data and facilitate the knowledge exchange between cities. Juried prizes include round-trip airfare to one of the participating cities and funding from Fusepool, the European / Swiss Datapool, for developing the project into an app.

The Silver Line Lives! (On Metro’s New Map, At Least): DCist

Metro’s Silver Line will be operational at some point this year, and the transit agency is preparing by readying a new system map that includes line’s route.

A version of the map posted by Metro for public comments included thinner rail lines, station dots with “whiskers,” the removal of cross streets on station names, abbreviated station names, and a new legend. The full map is below.

Interestingly, Tysons Corner will be listed by its “old” name. Planners recently decided to drop the “corner” and just make the area Tysons, but it looks like the corner will live on on the new Metro map.

Want to know more about how the Silver Line will actually run? Greater Greater Washington has all the details.

Why Subtraction Is the Hardest Math in Product Design | Gadget Lab | Wired.com

Why Subtraction Is the Hardest Math in Product Design | Gadget Lab | Wired.com

Simple doesn’t just sell, it sticks. Simple made hits of the Nest thermostat, Fitbit, and TiVo. Simple brought Apple back from the dead. It’s why you have Netflix. The Fisher Space Pen, the Swiss Army Knife, and the Rolex Oyster Perpetual are some of our most enduring products. All are marvels of simplicity.

Yet while many mechanical marvels of simplicity remain true to their original form, most electronic ones do not.

Travel back in time to use your parents’ first microwave and you’ll likely see a box with three buttons (High, Medium, Low) and a timer dial. By contrast, one of LG’s current models boasts 33 buttons. Do I hit Auto Defrost or Express Defrost? And what the hell is Less/More? None of these make my popcorn pop faster or taste better. And it’s not easier to use. Why do products become more complex as they evolve?

Cool Infographics – Blog – Its All About The Images

Here’s some irony for you. It’s All About The Images infographic from MDG Advertising relays information visually about the importance of relaying information visually.  Yes, it’s very meta. Some say image is everything, and that’s especially true on the Internet where the shift to visual optimization is playing an increasingly important role in the recent phenomenon of photo marketing. In light of their numerous benefits for brands of all kinds, MDG Advertising developed an insightful infographic that illustrates the influence of images on a company’s business, branding, search, and social media efforts. For insight on optimizing images for content and commerce, along with advice on image optimization techniques, take a look at the following infographic to see why images can help make success a snap.In our world, this information is true for posting infographics as well as photo images.

Cool Infographics – Blog – Seven Motorcycle Safety Tips

I have a unique interest in this infographic, but for right now it is a secret!

The Seven Motorcycle Safety Tips infographic comes to us from Bisnar|Chase. This infographic gives some helpful tips on saftey to prevent injuries, but if you do have an accident, they’d like to help!

Motorcycle safety is no joking matter. Please take your safety seriously. If you do become injured in a motorcycle accident we would like to help. Contact us immediately to schedule your free consultation with our reputable California motorcycle accident lawyers.

A couple things I really like about this design.

It tells a simple, easy-to-understand story

Clean design, not too much visual noise

Good illustrations to illustrate each safety tip and statistic

Each of the values included are visualized to make them quick and easily to read

The data source is listed in the infographic, but it’s missing a copyright statement and a URL to the original infographic posting at the bottom.  The page with the original posting is also missing sharing buttons for social media, so it’s difficult for readers to share the infographic.

Thanks to Chris for sending in the link!
