The Winning Design for DC’s 11th Street Bridge Park

On Thursday morning, the design jury for the highly-anticipated DC park will announce that the winning proposal comes from the team of OLIN, OMA and Arup.Plans have been in the works for over a year to turn three concrete piers into one elevated park connecting Anacostia and Navy Yard. The goal of the project is to create a connecting design with an appeal similar to that of the Providence River Bridge park in Rhode Island, although many compare the planned park to the High Line in New York City.

Refined, Functional and Open Family Home Design Nestled Between Trees

After moving around for work, living in eight houses over the past ten years, a family with two small children finally decided to settle down. Choosing Mandeville Canyon, a small community in Los Angeles’ Brentwood neighborhood, the family found a 3.14-acre lot sheltering over 200 mature trees and everything was set in motion. They decided to work with Rockefeller Partners Architects in building a home that would not only be cozy and bright, but also open to the expansive views of the city and ocean beyond. The architects remember how their work spoke for itself: “When they learned that three of their favorite houses in west Los Angeles had all been designed by the same architect, and further discovered that this architect had designed but never had a chance to build a house for their Mandeville property’s previous owners, they knew they had found their firm.”

Outdoor-Oriented Dream Home/Office Implants Modern African Aesthetic in Switzerland

We’re used to SAOTA‘s impressive and imposing residences and pleased to see each of them unravel before our virtual eyes. This time we’ll be admiring a fascinatingly transparent Lake House in Geneva, Switzerland. Attracting the eye with an unusual architecture, the building acts as both a residence and an office. The client is a fan of the illustrious architecture team and this 2,800 sqm family home and office is the 4th home SAOTA has designed for him. The owner can boast about a wonderful collection of homes in Cape Town and Paris and Senegal. This one is located on Lake Geneva, and features sculptural design lines shaping a provocative architecture.

Houzz Tour: Tying Together a Boston Loft

The owners of this loft had been seduced by its sweeping Boston skyline views and vibrant historic South End neighborhood, but its existing built-ins and other features didn’t stand up to the loft’s 18-foot-high ceilings, and the spaces did not make the most of the views. Working with the architects at ZeroEnergy Design, they embarked on extensive renovations to create efficient multipurpose spaces, including a home office, built-in storage, room for guests and a nursery for their first baby, who was on the way. Here’s what they did.

The Institute for Computational Design ICD and the Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design ITKE of the University of Stuttgart designed and built a robotically woven carbon fiber pavilion whose structure was inspired by beetles. Continuing the tradition of building a new pavilion each year, ICD and ITKE’s design explores the limits of biomimetic design, lightweight shells, and robotic fabrication.

AD Round Up: Architecture in Brazil II

World Cup coverage has brought Brazil to the forefront of the public’s attention. While the country’s hasty construction of 12 massive stadiums has received criticism, this article from Christopher Hawthorne at the LA Times reveals that Brazil is, now more than ever, a hotbed of architectural progress. In light of this, we’ve compiled some of our favorite works from this year’s World Cup host country, including: Tacoa Arquitetos’ Adriana Varejão Gallery, JPGN House by Macedo, Gomes & Sobreira, a welcome center by Rocco, Vidal + arquitetos, and Um House by Terra e Tuma Arquitetos Associados.  Also included is the 360° Building by Isay Weinfeld, Galeria House by MACh Arquitetos, Ipes House by Studio MK27 – Marcio Kogan + Lair Reis, a night club by Muti Randolph + Marcelo Pontes + Zemel + Chalabi Arquitetos, and NITSCHE ARQUITETOS’ Bernard Luis housing condominium.  Enjoy!

Starbucks Flagship Store opens at Downtown Disney Orlando

It begins with a blank piece of white paper. When Starbucks senior designer David Daniels is challenged with creating a new store, he starts sketching chairs or a table setting and thinks about all the meaningful moments that will happen in the space.“My imagination runs wild, and as I draw I think about how somebody might meet the girl of their dreams there. All sorts of things could happen there, if only the walls could speak,” said Daniels, as he looked at the original drawings for Starbucks new store in Downtown Disney West Side at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Florida.
